New academic textbook published by Elsevier
A new chemical engineering textbook titled “Chemical Engineering Process Simulation” was recently published by Elsevier in partnership with IChemE by the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) academic Professor Ir Dr Dominic CY Foo.
Following the publication of the book, a book launch event was held at the IChemE Malaysia Award Dinner 2017 at InterContinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 16 October 2017. The book launch event was hosted by IChemE Malaysia Board Chairman Professor Ir Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman. One of the chapter authors, Ir Rafil Elyas, was also present during the book launch event.
Both Prof Foo and Ir Rafil are active Fellow members of the IChemE. Professor Foo also chairs the Malaysia Chapter for the IChemE Education Subject Interest Group (EdSIG). Ir Rafil is the Principal Engineer of East One-Zero-One Sdn Bhd, an oil and gas consultancy company which focuses on advanced process solutions using process simulation technologies. Ir Rafil also serves as industrial supervisor for the chemical engineering design project at the Department of Chemical and Environment Engineering at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
“I am glad that a useful textbook is now published and we can now use the book to teach process simulation at the undergraduate level,” said Professor Aziz during the book launch.
Professor Foo said, “I would like to acknowledge all my chapter authors for contributing to the success of this book. Many of them are international leading experts in process design and simulation, such as Rafil. It is of utmost importance to teach students with first principles at the university. Hence, a textbook that has the fundamental knowledge of process simulation is certainly very important.”
This is the second time that Professor Foo launched a textbook with IChemE. The last book launch event was held during the IChemE Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers (SOMChE) 2012, where Professor Foo launched his textbook on process integration (see info here).
About the editor
Professor Foo is an active member of professional engineering bodies in Malaysia and the UK. He has published four books and more than 130 papers in international refereed journals and has made more than 190 conference presentations. He is the journal Editor-in-Chief for Process Integration and Optimisation for Sustainability (Springer), and Subject Editor for Process Safety & Environmental Protection (Elsevier), among others.
In 2009, Professor Foo won IChemE’s Innovator of the Year Award. Shortly afterwards came recognition from the Institution of Engineers Malaysia who presented Professor Foo with the Young Engineer Award 2010. In 2012, Junior Chamber International lauded him the Outstanding Young Malaysian Award, while in 2013 he received the Award for Outstanding Asian Researcher and Engineer from the Society of Chemical Engineers Japan (SCEJ). In 2014, he was also awarded the University of Nottingham Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award. He was then awarded the Top Research Scientist Malaysia by the Academy of Science Malaysia.
About the book
The new textbook “Chemical Engineering Process Simulation” covers fundamentals, theory, and advanced applications of chemical engineering process simulation. The book covers the use of some important process simulation software such as UniSim Design, PRO/II, ProMax, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Energy Analyzer and Aspen Utility Planner. The content of the book includes the basic of process simulation, as well as its advanced applications, such as the design of reactive and azeotropic distillation, dew point control unit, gas sweetening with MDEA, chemical production, optimisation of heat exchanger network and utility systems. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students in chemical engineering will find this book useful. Engineering practitioners in the chemical process industry will also find this a useful reference book.
