Software Engineering Group Project Experience

Miss Sonia Mubasher, a 2nd year BSc (Hons) Software Engineering undergraduate student shares her experience of carrying out the Software Engineering Group Project (a compulsory module for all second students). Her group project titled ‘Farmer Business’ was carried out under the supervision of Mr. KR Selvaraj to help their client Crops for the Future (CFF) create a one-stop Business-to-Business (B2B) platform for farmers.

Hi, my name is Sonia. In our Software Engineering Group Project, we were given a task of creating a solution to allow small-scale farmers to bypass intermediaries, thus allowing them to earn higher incomes while delivering fresher products to business owners and customers. Another aim of the project was to allow a new variety of products such as made from underutilised crops to be introduced to the market. We developed a ‘Farmer Business App’ that allows farmers to buy or rent farm equipment from other farmers or business owners and to sell their crop yield directly to business owners. The group project gave us the opportunity to learn how to design and develop the app using Angular Frontend Framework and Spring Boot Backend Framework with MySQL database. By hosting the app on Amazon Web Service (AWS), it could be accessed across all platforms from mobile phones to desktop computers with zero hassle! Creating a user-friendly interface was essential to meet the needs of our targeted users – rural farmers with limited technological know-how. So, it was an interesting yet challenging experience. Other than gaining skills in research and development, we also learned about the importance of teamwork to overcome challenges and ensure the successful completion of a project – which we accomplished with great satisfaction!
