Elephant collaring

On Monday 29th of April, MEME and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia tagged a male elephant – named Awang Belitung – with a GPS-satellite collar to study its movements. MEME’s team include MRes student Ange Tan, who is studying the distribution of elephants in Peninsular Malaysia; and PhD candidate Ee Phin Wong, who is monitoring elephant stress levels using non-invasive hormone sampling from feces; and Param, MEME’s senior field tracker. MEME hopes to track the movements of Awang Belitung for the next couple of years and understand how he moves among plantations.
