Alumni Testimonial: Tee Wan Ting (2019)

Can’t believe it has been months since I last graduated from MPharm Degree in UoN! I can still vividly remember when I first joined UNM Foundation in Science, I couldn’t make up my mind on which course to choose. If you asked me why pharmacy five years ago, I wouldn’t know how to answer this. But now, I got this!

Why pharmacy? To me, the measure of a fulfilling life is to be able to help people in need. I want to create value through the things that I do as a qualified pharmacist and use them to impact lives. I am currently doing my pre-registration training at Peterborough City Hospital, UK and I enjoy my working life so far! Obviously pre-reg life isn’t easy, because as a pre-reg you are not only responsible to your work, you also need to study and do revision because there is a pre-reg exam after a year of training. In fact, it is double workload as compared to usual working adults.

Hints and tips on how to ace a pre-reg life, and these are what I do every day:

  1. Be proactive. You take charge of your own learning. Ask if you don’t know. Do not guess. Take the initiative to look up for the answer using reliable sources.
  2. Do not perceive dispensary is boring and you couldn’t learn much. Take the initiative to look up for the drugs that you are unfamiliar with.
  3. Open yourself to any opportunity, never be afraid to lend a helping hand if you could. You will receive more than what you give.
  4. Life is NOT only about pharmacy. Work-life balance is relatively important – do not forget about your social life, take some time to connect with your university friends.

I truly enjoy hospital pharmacy because I love variety!  As a hospital pre-reg, I get to shadow the ward pharmacists and sometimes the specialist nurses in different wards with different specialities. On a daily basis, I perform medicine reconciliation for the patients, address their concern with medicines, review patient’s drug chart and clinically screen the prescriptions. Sometimes, I got to present real-life cases to the pharmacist. The feeling is so surreal when what you learnt from university apply into practice! Besides being on the wards, I also work with the dispensary team in the both outpatient and inpatient dispensaries and learned how to be a team player.

I want to take this opportunity to thank University of Nottingham MPharm Programme delivery team. I did not regret that I had embarked on this journey as a 2+2 student – it is the best deal ever as I got to stay close to home in the first 2 years in Malaysia, as well as got university experience in UK later on.

It is no doubt that the 2+2 MPharm programme had prepared me so well for this pre-reg year especially with all the support given throughout my university life. Two of my favourite modules in final year are: Pharmacy Leadership and Management (PLM) and Integrated Pharmaceutical and Patient Care (IPPC) – which equipped me with a very good foundation of clinical knowledge and shaped me into a confident pre-reg pharmacist.

If you are considering a MPharm programme but not sure where to go, I would definitely recommend University of Nottingham.
