RTAD: October’s Highlights

The Research Training & Academic Development (RTAD) organised its annual Postgraduate Welcome Week, from 1st until 4th October 2013. The programme was designed to cater to the needs of new postgraduate students including finding their way around the University, meeting new people and settling into their new life on the campus. These are the sneak peeks of the events that occurred throughout the programme.

Introduction to the Graduate School, PhD Life and Thinking About Your PhD

This first introductory session introduced the Graduate School, outlined what to expect in the life of a PhD student and how to go about the processes involved during a PhD.

Careers and Employability – Introduction to a Research Career

In this session Liza Zaheed, the Project Services Interface Manager from Shell Malaysia, sat down with participants to give an insight on career options for postgraduate students.

SWIRL – So What’s It Really Like?

As the title suggests, this session gave an insight about life at UNMC from former and current postgraduate students through an informal forum for old and new postgraduate students.

Welcome Week Satay Night 

This session was intended to help new and current postgraduate students get to know each other, while introducing the non-local students to one of the best delicacies in town, Satay.

A Session with Supervisors

This session was for supervisors to give their views on what their expectations are for a PhD student and what the life of a PhD should be like.

Treasure Hunt

Rather than organising a campus tour, we opted for a different activity to enable new postgraduate students to get to know their campus, which was through Treasure Hunt.

Coffee and Cake with Alumni Office

In this session, postgraduate students were able to learn more about the Alumni Office while at the same time get an insight from UNMC alumni, Chin Wai Hong who is  the Manager of Talent Management in Bursa Malaysia Berhad.

We hope everyone who participated in this year’s Postgraduate Welcome Week enjoyed every bit of it. We sincerely thank everyone for their participation and in making the Postgraduate Welcome Week a successful one. Hope to see everyone in our future events!

 

International Activity:

Dr Christopher Hill, Director RTAD, presented a paper on developments in international education at the Association of Commonwealth Universities Centenary Conference in London, UK and while attending the reception in Buckingham Palace, had the opportunity to meet a very special host.
