Images of Postgraduate Experience 2018: Overall Winner

Experience sharing #2

This post is contributed by Hsin-Yuan Chen, overall winner of the Images of Postgraduate Experience Photography Competition 2018 and PhD student from the School of Psychology.

It was a truly rewarding experience in participating in the photography competition this year. I would like to thank the Graduate School for organising this competition, allowing all photography enthusiasts to showcase our creativity, thus enriching the photographic culture at the University. The entries from the rest of the participants were indeed excellent and inspiring. I was surprised and grateful to be awarded as the overall winner.

The (above) photo was taken in the backyard of my rental house in Nottingham UK. It snowed the night before and I got up early the next day to enjoy the snow. Capturing precious moments has helped me unwind from studying and I could spend hours taking photos. Photography is like research. It is frustrating when the outcomes do not meet our expectations. However, after countless attempts, we will definitely gain experience and be better than we were.

I am glad to share my photograph as it is a way to communicate and share my research journey. Studying a postgraduate degree can be a struggle in terms of time management, financial problems, working independently etc. We must constantly remind ourselves to stay true to our goal when we first started. Regardless of any challenges, every morning is a new beginning to keep striving. I wish that at each milestone in our lives; we become more versatile, more open-minded to adapt changes.

Morning dew is so clear and pure, reminding me to stay true to the very first goal when I started. Water falls in rain and snow, its versatility has inspired me to be as diverse as I can and I am the master of my own destiny.
