A recap of the Images of Postgraduate Experience photography competition

This post is written by Dr Tissa Chandesa, Research Training Development Manager.

This year’s Images of Postgraduate Experience photography competition was launched during our annual postgraduate welcome programme on Monday 30 September 2019.

The theme was “Endgame” where postgraduate students were asked to answer the following question:

“What is your ultimate goal out of this research course that you’re doing? Who do you want to become? What do you want to produce and where do you want to end up in your career? What do you picture yourself as after you obtain your degree? Show it to us in a photo and a caption of no more than 50 words.”

We had 11 entries from all faculties. All participants received a certificate of achievement. The Overall Winner and Runner Up were determined by a panel of judges, comprising of academics and non-academics. The People’s Choice on the other hand was decided based on popular vote.

The winners were announced during our Christmas event on Wednesday 4 December 2019.

Winner: Kumbirai Ivyne Mateva, School of Biosciences
Runner Up: Mak Yin Ying, Department of Biomedical Sciences
People’s Choice: Nguyen Nhat Tan, Nottingham University Business School

Each year, our postgraduate students amaze us with their vast imagination and creativity by linking a simple and ordinary photo with an impactful caption that resonates closely to what they are experiencing as part of their ongoing research journey. The photos ranged from several breathtaking scenery, capturing the utmost beauty of Mother Nature as well as the importance of balancing work and family. Here I will quote the winner’s caption “Wherever your academic and personal life takes you, grow and bloom with grace.”

Undertaking a postgraduate course can be a lonely and stressful journey, at times. So, have a break from your research work from time to time and visit H1B12 where we have plastered all the photos and captions for everyone to look at. I hope that the wisdom imparted by the class of 2019 entries will help you stay motivated for the remaining duration of your postgraduate course.
