Postgraduate Research Students Survey

A survey for postgraduate research students (PGRs)

We highly value our postgraduate researchers and we want to reassure you that the University is looking at how best to support your needs.

At the Graduate School, we spend a lot of time advocating for our PGRs especially on issues affecting your research progress. As you are aware, we have recently launched a PGR survey earlier this month. The information from this survey will help us in supporting strategic decisions and determining areas for improvement.

The survey closes on Friday 29 October 2021 at 5pm and we would like to encourage all our PGRs to respond.

Introduction to ORIS for new postgraduates

• Monday 1 November 2021, 10am – 12nn

• This course will introduce the use of information sources in our library and develop the skill sets and knowledge in information searching.

• Wednesday 3 November 2021, 10am – 12nn

• This course will inform students on how to create, populate and use Mendeley, a bibliographical manager in organising their literature review.

• This course will inform students on how to create, populate and use Endnote, a bibliographical manager in organising their literature review.

Preparing for your annual review

• This course will discuss the elements of the annual review process and consider the possible structures of an annual review report.

Preparing for the viva

• Thursday 11 November 2021, 10am – 12nn

• This course will delve into the main purposes of viva, its process and criteria as well as some key skills to consider in the lead up to, and during the viva itself.

• This course will explore the different components and types of editing academic writing as well as some of the challenges commonly faced.

• This course will consider ways of drafting and structuring a thesis.

Creating a strong argument for your thesis

• This course will discuss the background to the nature of arguments and consider the thesis as an ‘argument’ and its structure.

• This course will identify the features of good academic writing, discuss effective writing plan, and consider techniques for starting and finishing a thesis chapter.
