UNM Biomedical Sciences PhD Student Won LMIC Travel Award in ISV Congress 2019

International Society for Vaccines (ISV) organises annual congress to gather professionals and young trainees in the field of vaccines from around the globe. This year, the congress was held at International Convention Centre, Ghent, Belgium from 27th to 29th October 2019. Thanks to the support from my supervisor Dr Fang Chee Mun, I have been selected as one of the Lower and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) travel award recipients to present in the congress.

Ghent, Belgium.

In the congress, invited speakers from reputable universities, research institutions, and vaccine companies presented the latest scientific findings in the research and development for vaccines and immunotherapies. There were five plenary sessions which cover different aspects of vaccine research including emerging infectious/ neglected diseases, personalized cancer vaccines, influence of the microbiome, profiling of immune response to vaccination concerning age and administration routes, and next generation technologies for vaccine development. The congress also featured career development session to provide advices to young scientists and Bright Sparks in Vaccinology session for junior researchers to present their research.

Plenary talks were given by experts in the field of vaccinology at ICC Auditorium.

A total of 114 posters were presented in the first and second day of congress. My poster was entitled “Immunogenicity and Protection Efficacy of Enhanced Fitness Salmonella Typhi Live Vector Bivalent Vaccines against Toxoplasma gondii”. As a research student, I appreciate the poster session which gave us the opportunity to present our research findings and receive constructive feedbacks from the peers and experts. I am also grateful to meet researchers who came from different countries and are truly passionate about conducting vaccine research.

All the posters were set up at ICC Minneplein.

It was an honour to receive the LMIC award presented by ISV President Professor David Weiner (left) and Congress Chairperson Professor Ted Ross (right) during the congress dinner.

In deep gratitude, I express my heartfelt thanks to ISV and my supervisor for making this trip possible. Thanks to this eye-opening congress, I learn that we are making progress in the endless battle to eradicate both old and emerging infectious diseases. I respect the efforts given by the researchers in developing a vaccine and hopefully I can also contribute to overcome the challenges in developing effective vaccines for humans! Lastly, I strongly recommend research students who is working on vaccine development to participate in the coming ISV Congress (https://isv-online.org).
