Experience Sharing: Summer Internship at Duopharma
By Ms. Chen Yee Jie, who is currently a final year BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical & Health Science student based at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.
Where did you do your summer internship? How long was it?
I completed a three-month summer internship at Duopharma Innovative Sdn Bhd, from June 4th to September 3rd, 2024. My department was Formulation and R&D Technologies. I’ve chosen the Glenmarie site in Shah Alam.
What did it involve?
During the internship, I was assigned to my supervisor, and my role as an intern was to help her with her tasks and I also learnt a lot from her. I spent most of my time in the lab assisting the formulation team with dispensing, tablet production, blister packaging, and other tasks. I had a great time in the lab because the people there were kind and easy-going.
Because all of the departments there collaborate, I get to join other departments and help them with their respective duties. As an example, I joined the Analytics team and prepared analytical samples. Of course, I was also assigned some documentation tasks, such as preparing SOPs.
What did you find interesting throughout this experience?
My colleagues were very interested in food hunting. Even if they’ve worked hard all day, they’ll often talk about great food. Also, if someone’s birthday approaches, they buy a cake and share it with all of their colleagues. So I felt very happy because I had 3-4 different cakes during my internship, and the cake they bought was delicious. Some of the pastries they brought were even homemade cakes. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that all of my colleagues at Duopharma were foodies, and they treated me really well.
How did the summer internship support your learning and future career development?
The summer internship was really helpful for my studies because I was engaged in the pharmaceutical environment for three months. It solidified my understanding of pharmaceutics, particularly lab techniques, which I believe are crucial for my FYP in Year 3. The internship also gave me a fundamental understanding of the job responsibilities in pharmaceutical companies, particularly in R&D.
What is one take home message you obtain from this experience?
My supervisor and other colleagues have expressed envy for me because I am still young and in school. They also advised me to enjoy my school life now because switching to a working life will be difficult. So, while I’m still studying at UNM, I’d like to cherish these beautiful moments while also preparing for the next step of my life. Special thanks to my supervisor and other colleagues for their advice and guidance throughout the internship; I had an interesting and unforgettable experience at Duopharma.
