Images of Life as a Postgraduate

The Graduate School of the UK Campus launched an image competition specifically for Masters students – Images of the Postgraduate Experience Competition, where students are invited to capture the essence of their studies and experience with a single photographic image that they have taken themselves. The image could be anything that in some way represents, connects with or comments on their studies and experience of the University Campus.

Take a look at the following winning images.  The winning photographs were displayed in the Graduate Centres and 500 postcards of the images were distributed across the Graduate Centres.

Life as a PhD

“The image above is trying to show my first two weeks experience at the university. The image reflects on my whole activities for the first two weeks. The image not only gives the idea of how my first two weeks of the university were but also illustrates how I have enjoyed and took a full advantage of the weeks by attending and being involved in all activities and going to introductory lecture sessions.”

“Independence and freedom are key to happiness. Being a postgraduate student may mean different things to different people, however when it comes to the University of Nottingham, one thing is certain: there is something for everyone. Beautifully tranquil University Park and Jubilee campus with their lakes and greenery offer a peaceful and inspiring study environment while still offering the exciting night life to students in Nottingham City centre only a short bus ride away. When walking through the campuses, it is evident that the University is enjoying the presence of students from countries all over the world, each offering their unique cultural perspectives in return for high quality, support and advice tailored to their needs. There are many places to relax and enjoy, yet the days on campus for me personally are those reflected in my images: with plenty of sunshine and blue skies, heads bursting with lots of exciting new ideas stimulated by lectures and above all, enduring friendships that will hopefully stand the test of time and distance when our life journeys separate, ahead of new and exciting careers.”

“I took this photograph on my first day on my post graduate placement at The Nottingham Writers’ Studio (NWS). The NWS is located in a beautiful building in the heart of the Lace Market. It was founded in 2006 to support its members, mostly Nottingham-based writers, but also including publishers, editors, teachers and other literature professionals in their career in the writing industry.

My placement as Marketing Assistant is funded by The European Regional Development Fund. I will be carrying out research to support the Development Director in developing the audience and participation in the Studio’s activities. I took an image of green lace artwork on the wall of the Studio, and I liked the way the glass reflected the doors. The image reminds me of how important the Studio is for opening doors to Nottingham’s community of writers, from all backgrounds.”

“It is somewhere in the Jubilee campus. It’s a Monday morning and I walked on a road alone. The deep dark sky attracted me.”

“Being beautiful comes naturally for me! Flowers are synonym to the vast University Park campus. They are found in all shapes, sizes and colours here and are such a treat to watch. This picture depicts a flower opening its petals and soaking in all the sunlight it could. The ample amount of sunlight really beautifies the flower. The picturesque campus fails to disappoint anyone looking for some natural beauty. The abundant flowers make me rally appreciate how beautiful nature can be even in its minute form. Whatever artificial objects we create, we can hardly come near to how amazingly beautiful nature can be.”

Mustafa Kheraluwala, Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering

This year, the Graduate School of the Malaysia Campus would run a similar competition.  So watch out for the announcement which will be made in the near future.

Meanwhile, please send us any image that you think could relate to your postgraduate studies and we will feature it on our blog. Pictures tell a thousand words and looking at the pictures above, it is interesting to see how time as a student fills up your life with a variety of activities.
