Statistics Workshop

This post is written by Dr Tissa Chandesa, Research Training Development Manager.

Graduate School is into the habit of going far and beyond to make true on some of our young researchers’ wishes. This year (2018), we granted the wish of a young researcher who wished for a Statistics workshop for herself and her fellow colleagues. This was also echoed by the Head of Department for herself as well as for her members of staff.

They suggested the workshop be conducted by one of our very own Mathematician expert, Dr Ho Weang Kee. So, after 6 months of planning, the first ever Statistics workshop took place on 13 December 2018.

This workshop was very unique as it was driven mainly by the participants’ questions about Statistics. Instead of taking the normal route which is presenting a syllabus driven class, this workshop’s content was built on the foundation of the participants questions. During the 2.5 hour workshop, Dr Ho answered close to 40 Statistics questions.

Judging from the feedback received from participants’ at the end of the workshop, the workshop can be categorised as a great success. Everyone who attended said that they now know a bit more about the world of Statistics as compared to before they attended the workshop. They even suggested that such workshop should be made a permanent feature in the list of workshops that Graduate School offer, moving forward.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Dr Ho Weang Kee for all her guidance and support in making this workshop a reality. Also, to everyone who attended the workshop, thank you for your time. Because of you, the workshop was a resounding success.

As we reflect on the journey that we have taken thus far, as well as our achievements in 2018, we look forward to 2019 with great hope and believe that we will once again go far and beyond to listen and make true (if possible) on our researchers’ wishes, as part of their continuous research professional development. This is testament to our motto:

Your potential, our support – the possibilities are endless!

Wishing everyone a blissful 2019, ahead!
