Call for participation: UNM 2022 3MT®

Present your research at our 3MT®

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) challenges research students to communicate the significance of your research work to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.

This year, the competition will take place face-to-face where you will present your research live to a panel of judges.

The competition is open to all our PhD students who have passed your first-year confirmation review.

Awards and prizes

We are pleased to announce the award of prize money for this year’s winners:

  • 2022 3MT® Winner: RM1,000

  • 2022 3MT® 1st Runner Up: RM750

  • 2022 3MT® 2nd Runner Up: RM500

Why participate?

  • Develop your academic, presentation and research communication skills.

  • Effectively explain your research in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

  • Represent UNM at the tri-campus round and possibly the International Universitas 21 (U21) 3MT® competition.

How to participate?

1. Attend the briefing session

    • Wednesday 6 July 2022, 10am – 11am, H1B13

    • Participants taking part must attend this pre-participation briefing.

    • [New] This briefing will also be accessible via online for those who are unable to attend it physically. Use this code: 5o24q21 to join in MS Teams.

2. Confirm your participation

    • Submit your finalised static PowerPoint presentation to graduateschool@nottingham.edu.my by 12noon Friday 22 July 2022 to confirm your participation in this year’s competition.

3. Attend feedback sessions

    • You are strongly encouraged to attend as many feedback sessions to better prepare yourself for the competition. The purpose of these sessions is to provide advice and guidance on how to better structure and communicate your research work/communication to a non-expert audience.

    • All sessions will be delivered via face-to-face.

4. Attend the rehearsal session

    • Monday 15 August 2022, 2pm – 3.30pm

    • You are strongly encouraged to attend the rehearsal session to familiarise yourself with the approaches that will be taken for the competition.

5. Present your research

    • Tuesday 16 August 2022, 10am

    • Present your research live in front of a panel of judges.

Terms and conditions

  • You must be an active doctoral candidate and have successfully passed your first year confirmation review.
  • You must ensure you have access to a computer/tablet or smartphone that will support video calls in the event the competition is held online.
  • The Graduate School will provide training and support to you through the process and help you prepare for your presentation.
  • The winner will be selected by a panel of judges to represent UNM at the tri-campus round and possibly the International U21 3MT® competition.
  • Recordings of presentations may be published online and the recorded video may also be used as an entry for the University of Nottingham’s Tri-Campus 3MT® Competition (UK, China and Malaysia), the overall winner of which will be entered into the U21 3MT® Competition.
  • By submitting your video/delivering your 3MT® presentation at the final, you agree that the University of Nottingham may use, alter or adapt your video in whole/in part for educational and/or publicity purposes and that it may be used on the University website or external websites endorsed or supported by the University (including but not limited to YouTube and iTunes).
