Nurturing impactful research for the future
1st UNM Postgraduate & Early Career Researcher Conference
Our inaugural Postgraduate and Early Career Researcher Conference was successfully held on 6 & 7 December 2022 at Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre, University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM).
This conference brought together research scholars from multiple disciplines in the arts and sciences where it provided valuable insights from keynote addresses, plenary sessions and guest workshops. The conference also provided an inclusive and supportive platform for sharing of knowledge and exchanging of ideas with the aim at facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations.
The welcome and opening address was delivered by the Chair of the conference organising team, Professor Maniam Kaliannan, who is also the Associate Dean of Graduate School at UNM. The conference was later officiated by Professor Sarah Metcalfe, Provost and CEO at UNM.
The first keynote address, entitled Multidisciplinary Research – The way Forward, was delivered by Professor Andy Chan, the former Interim Vice-Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) at UNM; and the second keynote address, entitled Measuring Your Impact – The h-index, Citation & Impact Factor, was delivered by Professor Asgar Ali, Professor in Postharvest Biology and Technology and the founding director of the Centre of Excellence for Postharvest Biotechnology at UNM.
In six parallel sessions, the conference featured 34 presentations by postgraduates and early career researchers. A best presenter was drawn from each session based on the moderation by an expert panel of judges: Professor Nandha Kumar T, Dr Matthew Ashfold, Dr Jayalakshmy Ramachandran, & Dr Mandy Sim Siew Chen.

The second day of the conference featured workshops on how to produce high impact research and write good journal article by Professor Ts. Dr. Murali Raman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development & Strategy), Asia Pacific University (APU).
Although this was the first time the conference was held, it was an overall success in providing an avenue for young researchers to get the exposure and gain the experience presenting in an academic conference and subsequently, engage with a wider audience. With ambitious endeavours underway, we look forward to organising yet another successful conference this year.
