Invitation: Workshops
In conjunction with the Nottingham Research Leaders Programme (NRLP) delegation visit to UNMC, we are pleased to invite all postgraduate students and academic staff on campus to attend the workshops listed below. These workshops will be delivered by Mr Parmjit Dhugga (Head of Researcher Development, UK Graduate School) and Dr Jiin Woei Lee (Research Training Development Manager).
Drafting and editing a chapter of your thesis

Description
During the first half of this one hour workshop we will identify the features of good academic writing, discuss how to develop a plan to write effectively, and consider techniques for starting and finishing a chapter of your thesis.
We will then go on to explore the different ways of editing academic writing. We will briefly explore some of the challenges commonly faced when editing and we will help researchers to identify the different types of editing their work might need. Towards the end of the workshop we will provide tips on proofreading and ‘polishing’ your thesis chapter.
This session will be useful to those who have begun to write their thesis and particularly those in the later stages of their research degree.

Description
This workshop and the supporting online module will ensure that you understand your professional responsibilities. During the workshop we will identify the issues that can arise while planning, conducting and reporting your research. We will be sharing the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) views on research integrity, discussing existing good practice on research integrity, exploring assumptions and providing guidance on research practice as required by The Concordat to Support Research Integrity through case studies, discussions and a Q&A session.
There will be an opportunity for researchers to question and gain clarity related to current research practice at the University of Nottingham.

Description
Supervising research students is a process that can be both immensely rewarding as well as occasionally challenging. The expectations and approaches of the student and the supervisor, or supervisory team, as well as various external influences and requirements all impact upon the process and raise many issues to consider. This workshop is designed for UNMC staff who supervise or aspire to supervise research students, and who would welcome the opportunity to reflect upon and develop their supervisory practice.
During this workshop you will:
- Explore your own expectations of research supervision.
- Contrast your expectations with those of other supervisors, research students, and the institutional regulatory frameworks.
- Discuss and identify the characteristics of an effective supervisor over the early, mid and closing stages of a research degree.
- Explore how the University’s regulations & Quality Manual support these stages.
- Reflect on your own preferred supervisory management style.
