Teh Tarik Session Vol. 3
Our third series of Teh Tarik session was recently held on 25 April 2018. This session featured a talk by Dr Jim Chai on Photovoice – a qualitative method used for community-based participatory research to document and reflect reality. Dr Chai was the recipient of the Universitas 21 (U21) Early Career Researcher (ECR) Travel Grant 2017. The grant provided £2,000 to cover the travel cost to Santiago, Chile to attend the U21 ECR workshop at Pontificia Universidad de Católica de Chile.
Dr Chai was enticed by the use of Photovoice in qualitative research after attending the U21 ECR workshop in Chile last year. The theme of the workshop focused on interculturality and multiculturalism in our changing societies and how best to address them with different research approach. The use of Photovoice interested him in studying marginalised community and how it can be potentially used in exploring health services issues in Malaysia. In this Teh Tarik session, he also shared his 33 hours flight journey to Santiago to meet with researchers from different disciplines and countries.
Dr Jim Chai
Dr Jim Chai is an Assistant Professor at the School of Pharmacy. His main teaching areas are pharmacy practice, public health, social pharmacy and communication skills. After working as a clinical pharmacist for 10 years, his research interest focuses on exploring patient’s experiences of using medicines. He focuses on using qualitative methodologies producing research outcomes that can potentially improve patient health outcome.
