Discovering Careers in Health Sciences 2019
A huge thank you to the alumni that came down to UNMC to deliver a presentation on how their career was like after graduation and to all the students who attended the Discovery Careers in Health Sciences 2019 Alumni Sharing event. The event was a joint collaboration between Careers Advisory Service, Biomedical Science Society and PharmNotts.
On the afternoon of the 27th February, students gathered in the Great Hall.
Shadreen Fairuz from PharmNotts, the MC for the event, opened up with an introduction, then inviting Ms Alicia from Careers Advisory Service to deliver a speech. She introduced all the speakers while the token of appreciation was handed to the speakers.
The first presenter for the event was Mr Puvaindran. He shared with the audience his experiences in Johnson & Johnson working in Pharmacovigilance to ensure regulatory requirements were being met.
The second speaker was Ms Amelia Andrew Nazareth who graduated with a First Class Honours in Pharmaceutical & Health Sciences, moving on to work in Novartis as a Product Specialist. She went into detail on how she leveraged her extracurricular activities when she began working in sales.
Afterwards, the third speaker was Mr Lim Shi Hao who graduated with an MPharm Degree. He is currently the Policy Manager of the Pharmaceutical Association of Malaysia (PhAMA) and was involved in the consultation process of the National Medicines Policy and other industrial masterplans.
Last but not least was Mr Muhammad Shahrizal. His speciality lies in development of generic drug formulas based on off-patent drugs, and is involved in coordinating the process to introduce them into the market. He is currently a member of the Product Development team in Pharmaniaga Research Center Sdn Bhd.
All the presentations focused on the type of career they had, their company, expectations after graduation, the type of skills needed to improve their chances of being hired and how the speakers’ expectations lived up to reality.
After the conclusion of the presentations, the next segment of the event was a panel discussion. Prior to the event, a link was made available to all the people who signed up for the event to post their enquiries anonymously to the speakers. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr Kuan Hon Lim who directed the flow of the questions to the speakers.
Many interesting questions were asked such as salary, how to make a good first impression, postgraduate studies, internship opportunities, and so on. Dr Kuan Hon Lim then opened up the floor to the students to ask questions directly to the speakers.
After the panel discussion, everyone adjourned to the lobby outside for the light refreshments provided and to the food trucks parked outside. Many students stayed behind to engage with the speakers and converse with them.
