On-Campus Careers Fair Hailed A Success
The University of Nottingham Malaysia’s (UNMC) multi-sector recruitment event held at the Great Hall on March 18 and 19, 2015 was deemed a great success by organisers, attracting over 1,500 attendees.
Once again, this annual on-campus job fair was an initiative by UNMC to help create a connection between businesses and academia – providing future broad-based skills and opportunities to meet the different needs of students after they graduate.
Alicia Ch’ng, the head of UNMC Careers Advisory Service explained that like all other career activities on campus, the Careers Fair was designed to be an inspiring avenue for students to connect with industry-specific employers and learn for themselves the gateway to a successful career path in the future.
“The support from first-time and returning exhibitors underlines the significance of UNMC Careers Fair as the leading recruitment event on campus, which the organising teams have proudly presented with a high quality trade-show approach over the years,” said Alicia.
“With that in mind, a great pool of potential graduates attended the Careers Fair each year to connect with exciting ideas for future employment, so they can start tailoring their resumes and thinking about diverse career options after they graduate.”
Co-sponsoring the two-day event with platinum sponsor Bousted Group were Maybank and Shell; gold sponsors CIMB, Nestle and Eco World; while Axiata, Contact Singapore, GSL, IJM, MIDF, Public Bank and Unilever served as silver sponsors.
The opening ceremony on day one was officiated by UNMC provost Professor Christine Ennew, with UNMC director of student experience Mavis Tsang presenting gifts to all exhibitors which included Accenture, AIG Malaysia, Amcorp, Auric Group, Berjaya, Citibank, Dell, Deloitte, EY, Hitachi eBworx, Lintramax, PWC, Taylor’s Education Group and UOB.
Over 44 outdoor and indoor booths were filled with representatives from wide-ranging industries such as healthcare; banking; education; ICT & multimedia; FMCG; construction; engineering; telecommunication; energy & utilities; and automotive.
There were several exciting pre-careers fair events this year where students had the chance to network with recruiters from five companies a few months early through on-campus workshops. The workshops ¬– CV and Cover Letter Writing by Unilever; Interview Skills by PwC Malaysia; CV and Cover Letter Critique Day by KPMG; Mock Interview by GE; and How to Ace the Careers Fair by Graduan – gave the recruiters an opportunity to connect directly with students on issues relating to professional development and educational opportunities.
The opportunity to learn and share went beyond the careers fair itself. About a week after it ended, the Contact Singapore team, together with Realtek Singapore and ASM Technology Singapore, took the opportunity to highlight current job openings in their country by conducting first-round interviews with qualified UNMC candidates on campus, and shared their thoughts on leadership and social responsibility.
