Experience Sharing: Summer Internship at Attest Research Sdn. Bhd. (Hovid)
By Ms. Tan Eileen, who is currently a final year BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical & Health Science student who has exchanged to the UK campus to conduct her final year research project.
Where did you do your summer internship? How long was it?
I completed a three-month summer internship as a research and development intern at Hovid’s research center, Attest Research Sdn Bhd, in the Penang branch.
What did it involve?
During my three-month summer internship at Hovid’s research center, Attest Research Sdn Bhd, I enhanced my laboratory skills by developing proficiency in essential techniques such as using high-performance liquid chromatography, micropipettes, and pH meters. I was responsible for executing monthly calibration and verification of laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience in method development, particularly with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). I also reviewed protocols and reports in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure proper documentation. Furthermore, I managed daily laboratory maintenance, including temperature monitoring using the Smart-Vue system, contributing to the smooth operation of the lab.
What did you find interesting throughout this experience?
What I found particularly exciting during my internship was seeing theoretical knowledge come to life through practical application, especially in method development using LC-MS. Working with this advanced technology gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of scientific research. Another aspect that intrigued me was the meticulous nature of equipment calibration and how even the smallest details can significantly impact the accuracy and quality of the results.
Moreover, I enjoyed the chance to experience the dynamics of a professional laboratory setting. Beyond the technical skills, it was insightful to learn how a research team operates—balancing individual tasks while ensuring collective progress. Working with experienced scientists allowed me to understand the importance of time management, teamwork, and adapting to a structured work environment. This gave me a broader perspective on how research is conducted in a professional setting and the discipline required to thrive in it.
How did the summer internship support your learning and future career development?
The summer internship greatly supported my learning and future career development, not only through hands-on technical experience but also through the guidance I received from my supervisors. They were instrumental in helping me understand the hierarchical structure of the pharmaceutical industry and how different roles interact within research and development. Their mentorship extended beyond technical skills, providing me with career advice and a broader understanding of how the industry operates. They guided me in refining my lab techniques, navigating professional expectations, and understanding the importance of regulatory compliance.
In addition, my colleagues were incredibly supportive, sharing valuable insights into working life in a pharmaceutical firm. They offered practical advice on work-life balance, managing stress, and navigating the demands of a fast-paced research environment. These shared experiences have not only deepened my knowledge of the industry but also prepared me for the professional challenges ahead.
What is one take home message you obtain from this experience?
One key takeaway from this experience is the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in a dynamic and fast-paced environment like the pharmaceutical industry. Whether it’s mastering new techniques, adjusting to unexpected challenges, or collaborating with a diverse team, being open to learning and staying flexible is crucial for both personal growth and professional success. This internship reinforced the idea that scientific research is not just about technical expertise, but also about problem-solving, teamwork, and the ability to thrive in an ever-evolving industry.
What is your advice to current or prospective students on signing up for summer internships?
My advice to current or prospective students considering summer internships is to step out of your comfort zone and take every opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Internships are a great way to apply what you’ve learned in class to real-world situations, but they also offer so much more—you gain invaluable insights into your chosen field, develop practical skills, and build professional networks that can be beneficial for your future career. Don’t worry if the role seems challenging or unfamiliar at first; these experiences are meant to help you grow. Be proactive in seeking guidance from your supervisors and colleagues, ask questions, and take the initiative to learn beyond your assigned tasks. Finally, choose internships that align with your career interests, but don’t be afraid to explore new areas as they can open doors to unexpected opportunities.
