Alumni Testimonial: Shadreen Fairuz (2019)

I graduated from University of Nottingham in 2019 with a first-class honors degree. Throughout my degree I often wondered why I opted to study Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences, was it the conventional “helping others” argument that motivated my decisions or was there more to it?

Looking back at my three years of education at University of Nottingham I now see that this was an ideal choice for a career-orientated, opportunistic person such as myself. My field of study opened many new doors for me, introducing me to the various sectors of healthcare and providing the fundamental exposure of working in state-of-the-art labs.

I am currently working as a Teaching Assistant in a college, at the same time keeping up with the side hustle of working as part-time Content Designer for a start-up, both located in my home country Bangladesh.

I plan to incorporate my interest in pharma by pursuing graduate studies and then moving onto working with a pharma industry, where I am confident that the knowledge and expertise will bring fruitful results.

In this short gap between my studies and despite the drastic uncertainties from the global pandemic, my resolve to be a part of the pharma industry one day has only been strengthened further. I have been able to utilize the skills and expertise, including but not limited to health sciences, that I have proudly inherited from a prestigious and reputable institution such as University of Nottingham to pursue various interests of mine. I believe that the perfect balance between studying pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, biotechnology module lectures, labs, research projects and extracurricular activities deserves the credit for giving me the knowledge, experience and confidence for all my achievements in this past year.

I am also grateful for my student society experiences as I had been an active member and later in executive team for clubs like PharmNotts, working with which has been an amazing experience for me. As an international student, it was also easy to adjust in the friendly environment created by the staff and mainly professors who I am still in touch with and receive support and guidance from, even after graduation.
