‘The Christmas Tree Project’ Cheque Presentation
The Christmas Tree Project led by Carol D’Cruz and officiated by Provost and CEO Professor Graham Kendall extended its proceeds in a mock cheque ceremony on the 23rd of February 2017. The recipients of the cheques were representatives from Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih, Yayasan UNMC and the Student Association of UNMC.
Among those present were Executive Secretary of Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih, Herbert John Gomez; Committee Member, Datin Florence Baptist; and Treasurer, David Kurian. Several students and family members also attended the event.

Funds raised were mainly from donations that The Christmas Tree Project received since its officiation on the 7th of November till the end of December 2016. The project raised RM10,650 from their efforts. As such, Herbert Gomez accepted a RM4,000 cheque on behalf of Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih, while Patrick Joseph of Yayasan UNMC received a RM6,650 cheque.
During the ceremony, Professor Kendall reflected on his initial reservations towards the project, which was proposed by D’Cruz. “Carol asked if I was interested in building a Christmas tree for charity, and I said, well, I don’t think that’s going to work,” recalled a laughing Professor Kendall . The project did receive his approval, but he admitted to being slightly apprehensive. However, large support for the project following its official launch left him pleasantly surprised. Professor Kendall even took pictures of the tree, which was bare before, and the final product as a testament to the project’s incredible success.
Gomez, from Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih, also shared his words of gratitude. He spoke of the NGO’s two main projects. First, a charity home, Rumah Kasih. Then, a skills training center that educates young adults, teenagers, and children. There, they provide computer lessons, sewing classes and even English and Bahasa Malaysia lessons.
Gomez also spoke of his efforts to help this generation, saying that his main focus is on the children. Currently, there are 15 children in Rumah Kasih with 14 of them attending school. “We offer them financial aid and shelter, but most importantly with the help of all of you we offer them love and support,” he said.
Professor Andrew Morris presented a check of RM2000 to the current Student Association President, Linur Chubaev. Collected from the Christmas Market charity event also led by D’Cruz, this sum is intended for students’ clubs and societies. This charity event ran about the same time as The Christmas Tree Project.
Professor Kendall also highlighted the recent Dollars for Dumbells project initiated by the Student Association to raise money for EPIC Homes. He saluted the students for being active in the field of giving.
