Universitas 21 Travel Award

Md Amirul Islam, a second year PhD student from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham Malaysia is the recipient of the 2017/18 Universitas 21 (U21) Travel Award. Amirul is under the supervision of Professor Andy Chan and Dr Matthew Ashfold. The award of £3,000 allows Amirul to have a month-long attachment at a U21 University to develop his research.

The award supports high-quality doctoral students to develop their professional, research and career development profile. It will also establish a successful collaboration between the two universities in a specific field of research. This supports the University of Nottingham Malaysia strategic objective to expand the number, breadth and effectiveness of research and knowledge transfer partnerships, collaboration and joint ventures. As part of the application process to receive this award, Amirul had to explain in detail how his visit will help develop his professional, research and career development profile, benchmarked against the Vitae’s Researcher Development Framework. In addition, he had to provide a full and realistic cost of his project and details of how the funding will be utilised. This is in support of the strategic objective of U21, which is to promote the value and benefits of internationalisation.

According to Professor Sir David Eastwood, Chair of U21: “The U21 fund has been designed to share resources to support projects that will have a high impact on staff and students across the whole network. This is a very good opportunity to demonstrate how U21 seeks to offer value to staff and students by making a difference to their day-to-day experience, and that encourages innovative cross-university collaborations. I congratulate all those who entered the competition which is a fitting initiative to mark U21’s 21st anniversary year.”

Amirul will be visiting the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia at the Climate Change Research Centre as part of his month-long research project.
