Postgraduate Colloquium for Environment Research (POCER) 2019

The 5th Postgraduate Colloquium for Environmental Research (POCER) was held successfully on 8 and 9 August 2019 at Pulse Grande Hotel, Putrajaya, the federal administrative centre of Malaysia. POCER 2019 was organised by the Centre of Green Technologies (CEGT) of University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM).

POCER aims to provide a platform for postgraduate students and early-career researchers to engage in discussions with fellow researchers on their works in environmental research. This biannual postgraduate colloquium was first initiated in the year 2011 at the UNM campus in Semenyih. The second, third, and fourth POCER conferences were held at Genting Highlands, Kuching and Melaka respectively.

The theme for the 5th POCER was: “Green Technologies: Bridging Conventional Practices and Industry 4.0”. POCER 2019 received academic and industrial participants from seven countries. A total of 44 papers, a plenary and two keynote talks were presented during the conference.

POCER 2019 was jointly inaugurated by Professor Andy Chan, the Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Professor Dominic Foo, Director of CEGT. The plenary talk was given by Mr Albert Law, Regional Manager of ENLPRO Solutions, a company providing consultancy for the oil palm industry.  The speaker highlighted several key challenges from the oil palm industry and the required input from academic researchers to achieve an impactful outcome for the global market.

The keynote speaker Professor John Chi-Wei Lan from Yuan Ze University, Taiwan explained the new trend of bioprocess and brought a new business idea to share with research students for self-fermenting malt for the craft beer industry. Dr Ao Xia, another keynote speaker emphasised the hydrogen production pathways from microalgae.

There were six oral presentations and one poster session. The best presenter from each session was awarded a certificate and POCER plaques.

As part of the social event on the second day, committee members accompanied the participants to visit the Putrajaya Botanical Garden, Putra Square and the UNM campus.

The 5th POCER conference was chaired by Dr Suchithra Thangalazhy and co-chaired by Dr Faye Chong. Committee members included Dr Show Pau Loke, Dr Chan Yi Jing, Dr Lau Phei Li, Dr Anurita Selvarajoo, Dr Ianatul Khoiroh, Dr Senthil Kumar Arumugasami, Dr Chew Kit Wayne and postgraduate students from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.
