PhD candidate discusses the country’s political and economic development

Tricia Yeoh, and a PhD candidate at University of Nottingham Malaysia and a Fellow at the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) joined Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Chairman of Malaysia’s Higher Education Fund Corp (PTPTN) and Visiting Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute; and Wong Chen, Member of Parliament for Subang and Chairman of the Select Committee on International Relations and Trade, Parliament of Malaysia to discuss Malaysia’s Political Upheavals and the COVID-19 Crisis.

“Malaysia’s federal system can play a significant role in serving the country, through rolling out of their own economic packages and in making joint decisions with the federal government in tackling the economic challenges ahead. Strong, credible leadership and political stability will be required to restore the economy and ensure vulnerable communities pull through the bottom,” said Yeoh.

The webinar, which was held on Tuesday, 28 April, provided insight on Malaysia’s fluid political and economic development. Among the topics that the panellists covered included:

• the political considerations affecting the decisions and effectiveness of Perikatan’s Covid-19 response,
• how Pakatan Harapan is responding as a federal opposition,
• what additional actions would the people like to see the Perikatan Nasional administration take,
• the role the state government can play at this juncture and which states have played a constructive role,
• the significant personnel and policy changes by the Perikatan Nasional now that are not Covid-19 related and the direction this new administration will take in the coming months?
• What will it take for Malaysia to pull through these multiple crises?

The webinar was organised by The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) – Yusof Ishak Institute and was free for those who had registered.
