Virtual Summer School Programme for Indonesian University
A virtual summer school programme was hosted by UNM’s Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (CEE) from 18 September to 9 October for 80 undergraduate students from Diponegoro University, Indonesia (UNDIP). The participants were part of the World Class University Programme of UNDIP.
The main theme of the summer school programme was “Challenges in Solving Facemask Shortages to Combat COVID-19”. The objectives of the summer school were to equip students with problem solving skills through creative and critical thinking, to provide an opportunity for UNDIP students to interact with UNM students, and to create awareness on sustainability and environmental-related issues.
The summer school programme was facilitated by staff from CEE, including Professor Ir Dominic Foo, Professor Ir Ts Show Pau Loke, Ir Dr Hii Ching Lik, Dr Lim Siew Shee, Dr Ianatul Khoiroh and Dr Vasanthi Sethu. Various seminars, workshops and games were organised during the summer school programme, covering topics such as team building, supply chain, cocoa and chocolate, environmental sustainability, life cycle analyses, molecular simulation, microalgae and presentation skills. A forum, which discussed topics on the impact of COVID-19 on youth development and environmental sustainability issues in Southeast Asia, was also conducted on 7 Oct 2021 with students participating from both UNDIP and UNM.
The final event of the programme was a presentation seminar on 9 Oct 2021 where participants had to present a project proposal and create an awareness poster to address the main theme.
The Project Lead, Ir Dr Hii said, “This is the first summer school programme conducted by the department using virtual platforms. The participants expressed how much they enjoyed the activities and looked forward to joining again in the future. The team of facilitators had worked hard in ensuring good preparation for the activities and made them engaging even for online delivery.”
“It was a wonderful experience for both UNDIP students and colleagues in UNM, as a virtual summer school programme can be both fun and fruitful,” said Head of the CEE Department Professor Ir Dominic Foo.
