UNM Lecturers Industrial Visit to Maybank
The Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) has highlighted the need to take collaboration between universities and the industry to the next level.
Hence, Careers Advisory Service (CAS) took an initiative to organize a Nottingham Lecturers Industrial Visit to Maybank, Malaysia’s largest financial services group and the leading banking group in Southeast Asia.
A group of ten lecturers, together with Professor Deborah Hall, the Vice Provost (Research and Knowledge Transfer); Patrick Joseph, Director of Academic Services; Alicia Ch’ng, Head of CAS; and accompanied by two career advisers, visited the Maybank Tower, where they were able to foster relationship and partnership between Nottingham lecturers and Maybank.
During the industrial visit, they were given the chance to gain exposure on Maybank’s innovative recruitment process (talent recruitment) such as Maybank Go Ahead. Challenge (MGAC) and Global Maybank Apprentice Program (GMAP). Besides that, they also learned about Maybank’s approaches and practices in sustainable and responsible business.
It was such a privilege to have important people from Maybank such as Puan Marlin A Nordin, EVP, Head – Group Recruitment, Group Human Capital, Sophia Ang, Head of Talent Attraction and Workplace Futurisation; and Remy Khoo, Head of Digital Innovation and Strategy; sharing their inspiring stories, thoughts and knowledge, as well as discussing on possible opportunities and collaboration during the networking lunch. In addition, the lecturers have been introduced to UNM alumni as well as few others who are currently in Global Maybank Apprentice Program, where they shared their career journey and insights about GMAP.
Matthew Ashfold, a lecturer from School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences shared,
“Thanks to Careers Advisory Service who initiated this opportunity. The visit to Maybank was excellent! Interactions with key employers are crucial in developing programmes which best prepare our students for meaningful careers after graduation, and the insights we gained on Maybank’s recruitment strategy and priorities during the visit were especially helpful in this regard.”
Overall, the lecturers had positive feedback about the visit, expanding their perspectives on banking industry and refreshing their view on possible opportunities for the students. They enjoyed the visit, while a few of them have expressed great interest in collaborating in the future.
Special thanks to Sophia Ang and Sandra Lee from Talent Attraction and Workplace Futurisation as well as others for hosting us!
