Upcoming Training Course

In the current situation with C0VID-19, we would like to reassure you that we remain dedicated as ever to deliver the highest quality training and development for our ECR community.

Therefore, we would like to give an update on upcoming training and support provision.

Introduction to doing statistics in R

  • Tuesday 28 April 2020, 10am – 4pm

  • This course will provide a hands-on experience in using R which is an open source programming language for advanced statistics and graphics.

  • Sign up is closed as the course is fully booked.

C0VID-19 Impact Statement

And the C0VID-19 Impact Statement is still now available for download so that Principal Investigators and postgraduate research students can start to record severe impacts on their research projects. This is essential for being in a good position to renegotiate Terms and Conditions of any affected Grant Agreements.

Chat with Professor Deborah Hall

We know and appreciate that this is a very challenging time to your postgraduate research students. As a result, we organised an informal session between your postgraduate research students and our Vice Provost of Research & Knowledge Exchange, Professor Deborah Hall on Wednesday 22 April 2020. During the hour long session, Professor Hall addressed several concerns raised by the postgraduate research students pertaining to topics such as: (1) Research Update and C0VID-19 Impact Statement; (2) graduating on time, covering thesis submission, online viva voce examination, graduation ceremonies and certificate issuance; (3) annual review and progression; (4) disruptions on laboratory and experimental work; (5) research funds and critical expenditure; and (6) online training and development support. The informal session was attended by almost 50 postgraduate research students.

Nottingham Research Leadership Programme

During the week of April 20 to 24, the University of Nottingham is hosting its annual Nottingham Research Leadership Programme, virtually. The Nottingham Research Leadership Programme is aimed to enhance the professional development of our high-performing researchers. During the week, selected high-performing researchers from all three campuses will engage in discussing on issues pertaining to developing and embedding excellent research supervisory practices in light of a major incident (e.g. C0VID -19) happening. We wish the 2020 delegates all the best and look forward to their recommendations on what the university can put in place and practice, moving forward.

Online Training for Policy and Engagement 

The Institute for Policy and Engagement team are offering a range of training courses to develop your knowledge and skills in policy impact and public engagement. In light of the C0VID-19 pandemic, why not use this opportunity to prepare yourself to maximise your contribution in the post-Pandemic world. Supervising Doctoral Studies (SDS) online course

With face-to-face classroom discussions prohibited during the C0VID-19 pandemic, the University of Nottingham offers a set of self-directed online modules for new supervisors and those who have more experience. The online course has interactive content such as videos, quizzes and a personal portfolio. Kindly use your university credentials to join the course. You may access the online course via the following link.

We understand that this unprecedented situation can be very stressful and difficult to some of you. Please rest assured that wellbeing support is available to you.

Engaging via Microsoft Teams

At the Graduate School, we are happy to act as the mediator for any senior researchers to engage with early career researchers on issues pertaining to research sustainability during the C0VID-19 outbreak.

Issues may include (but not limited to) a chat about how you are currently coping with your research; how are you conducting your research when everything is shut down or unavailable; potential collaborations; a chat about future grant applications.
