Your engagement with us
An increase in attendance
The number of postgraduate students attending our Graduate School courses and events increased solidly in recent months with values of increase at almost 80% in March 2020 and more than 90% in April 2020.
The pandemic situation necessitated the campus closure and resulted in our prompt response in moving our training and development provision online. While we are obligated to embrace online learning, the rise in attendance is also partly due to developments in distance learning technology and a growing acceptance of online courses among our postgraduate students.
It is noteworthy to mention that we received many positive feedback from our postgraduate student on our online delivery of training courses and social events.
Virtualise our training and development provision
We realise that the impact of the pandemic would extend beyond just a few months and would require robust discussions to address the continuity of online environment in our training and development provision as well as support facilities. This may give momentum to our broader plan to offer online learning as a sustainable way to reach more of our postgraduate research students who are not based on campus.
“The nucleus to any form of teaching is the students. Therefore, the real challenge is adapting our face-to-face delivery to an online delivery while ensuring that it maintains a high engagement level with postgraduates as well as promotes an active learning throughout the online sessions,” said Dr Tissa Chandesa, Research Training Development Manager at the Graduate School.
We welcome any suggestions for improvement from our postgraduate students and you can get in touch with us via email to graduateschool@nottingham.edu.my.
New study on student mobility from U21
U21 research study finds comparable benefits to studying abroad and at-home extracurricular activities
A new study by Universitas 21 (U21) shows that students do not need to travel abroad to gain new perspectives and skills which can enhance their personal development and employability. The findings suggest that local, community based activities can be equally beneficial.

A chat with Professor Deborah Hall
In this blog post, we write about the virtual live chat where almost 50 of our postgraduate research students (PGRs) living across Malaysia and overseas joined a Q&A session with the Vice Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange), Professor Deborah Hall, using Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 22 April 2020.
“I really appreciated the opportunity to make a personal connection with our PGRs. The MCO (movement control order) is challenging for all of us in different ways and this was a chance for me to try to alleviate immediate concerns and reassure our PGRs that the University is looking at how best to support their needs,” said Professor Hall.
Look out for our next issue of Graduate School Bulletin this Wednesday!
In the meantime, please continue to observe and follow the safety advice and precautionary measures by our local authorities and University.
