Career Talk: Recruit your Top Talents in Nott

It was a great success for the Careers Advisory Service to organise our 2-hour career event – Recruit your Top Talents in Nott participating 76 employers and involving our event collaborator UNM AIESEC which is one of the active youth leadership development organizations here. The main objectives of the event are:

  1. To enhance the connection between industry partners and University of Nottingham Malaysia
  2. To provide more insights through this introductory session to facilitate employers’ organizations in their workforce planning and identifying the relevancy of a degree or course

Starting off with a career-related game, our first-year in Psychology emcee ChuangShan Nee took us through the game of ‘Would You Rather’ to get to know the employers’ opinions. After presenting the overview of what the university offers and background of the campus, it is followed by Recruit Our Talents talk by our Head of Careers Advisory Service, Alicia Ch’ng explaining our events such as resume competition, internship fair, career talks and also not forgetting the services offered such as Get Ready Get Hired (GRGH) Programme and Career Mentoring.

The event was continued with a presentation by Dr Jessica Price from School of Psychology about the overview on Faculty of Science and Engineering (FOSE). It was definitely insightful for the employers especially from the science and engineering industries to learn more about our science department such as the courses we offer, the personnel in the department, all-round student experience and the recent investment to upgrade and enhance the experience of the university’s science department. Besides, it was such a pride for us when Dr Price showed the audience what UNM students have achieved from being actively involved in clubs and societies to being hired at top companies!

Definitely not forgetting our other faculty in the university, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), presented by Dr Jason Pandya-Wood, the Dean of Arts and Social Sciences. It was valuable for us and the audience to have the opportunity to dive into how the students of UNM are equipped with the courses, modern teaching innovations, practical assessments and culture to prepare them when they get into the workforce related to their courses. Very excited to know that NUBS has developed with 2 new courses, which has progressed according to the digital era. Students could definitely learn from the FASS Alumni as a lot of them now are hired by top companies such as the Big 4 and top banks in Malaysia.

After the talks from both departments, we invited our student representatives from FOSE, Mabeth Tan and Xin Hui to display what they have experienced throughout their university time and achievements that they earned. Hope this sharing session will inspire students more in achieving more in terms of improving themselves and learning more about related industries which will help them in the workforce upon graduating

It was memorable to end the event with a photoshoot session and also Questions and Answers (Q&A) session between the participating employers and the student representatives along with speakers from both faculties to understand more on the recent perspectives from students and the university before they enter the workforce. Hope this session can close the gap in employment between the employers from various industries and university students.
