Alumni Testimonial: Siao Sue-Yi (2019)

Whenever someone ask me: What did you major in? The reply “pharmaceutical and health science” is always such a mouthful. The next question coming would be why I chose this course. Then the next 10 minutes would be spent discussing on the difference between this course and a degree in pharmacy. This became so much of routine that I would have an answer standardised for it. Nevertheless, choosing this course is something that I am proud of. How can I not be, when there are excellent teachers tutoring us in various modules; when we were encouraged to take electives from different schools to broaden our perspective and to look beyond what we were supposed to learn.

I suppose my story has been written in a way where I always took the road less taken. I chose this course as compared to pharmacy; I took electives that were not listed in the recommended list which are from school of psychology and school of biotechnology. In a way, I never regretted the choices that I’ve made because it was because of those choices that I get to meet different people, to see things in a different perspective. I got to meet lovely Dr Winnie Yap, who aims to know all her students and are always supportive of them. I’ve also got the chance to expose myself to something that is entirely new and to pick up new skills when I took up my final year project with Dr New Siu Yee.

Anyways, what I would like to say is that if you are someone who would like to further your study in the field of medicinal chemistry and are passionate about working in the lab, then I would like to say you’ve made the right choice.

Onwards and upwards!
