Malaysian Independence Day Special

Malaysia’s Independence Day, known locally as Hari Merdeka, is celebrated annually on 31st of August. It is to commemorate the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957.

In commemoration of the momentous occasion, we will be holding an exhibition entitled “Assimilation of Art – The Influence“, from 28th August 2015 to 25th September 2015 @ H1B12.

The Idea

The impact of independence is more often measured in terms of the growth of a nation. We often forget that there are other aspects in which independence has helped to shape, such as art. The exhibition focuses on the assimilation of two (or more) different art entities which creates a whole new identity, unique to the community or society.

The Purpose

The exhibition is intended for us to view independence in a different light and appreciate the assimilated artistic elements that have become a part of our lives.

Your Involvement

We would like to invite all UNMC postgraduate students to participate in the exhibition by sending in your exhibit(s). The exhibit can be anything in the form of drawing, painting, sculpture, craft, clothing, text, visual media, photography, etc. but must be related to art and independence. We also welcome submissions from non-Malaysians.

Submission opens now until 14th August 2015.

We hope that the exhibition will be a platform to foster community cohesion and civic engagement, while promoting and appreciating art. For any further queries, please email us at Amirah.Zin@nottingham.edu.my or Lisa.Chin@nottingham.edu.my.
