Coffee and Cake Session: Malaysian Independence Day Special

The months of August and September are of utmost significance to Malaysians as we commemorate and celebrate Merdeka (Independence) Day on Aug 31st and Malaysia Day on September 16th. It is time again for Malaysians, regardless of race and irrespective of where they are, to spare a thought about the significance of Merdeka and what it means to us.

In conjunction with the momentous celebration of Merdeka, a Coffee and Cake Session, featuring an exhibition entitled “Assimilation of Art – The Influence” was held on 28th August 2015.

The Coffee and Cake Session offered an interactive and informative platform to foster community cohesion and civic engagement as well as to rekindle the spirit of patriotism among the attendees, regardless of nationality.

We will feature each of the exhibit on our Postgraduate Blog and Facebook as we hope to showcase the content of the exhibition with a wider audience. The exhibition is intended for us to view independence in a different light and appreciate the assimilated artistic elements, unique to our community or society.

Such occasion enable people to rekindle their patriotic spirit, which is absolutely essential for social cohesion and unity in a nation with diverse races, cultures and religions. Commemorating Merdeka Day helps to remind us and the younger generations of the contributions and sacrifices of past leaders, who helped to secure our independence.

The next Coffee and Cake Session will be held on 28th October 2015. Full details will be announced in due course. The monthly Coffee and Cake Session is an interactive social platform for postgraduate students to meet and mingle. Each session features different theme or topic aimed to offer a varied and vibrant programme of social and educational activities. All postgraduate students are welcome to join!

If you are a postgraduate student, we welcome you to send in your opinion and constructive suggestion for future sessions via email to Amirah.Zin@nottingham.edu.my or Lisa.Chin@nottingham.edu.my. Your input is valuable to our continuous effort for further improvement.
