Research Boot Camp, October 2016

What do PhD students need to help them get started on their research degrees?

The offering of the Researcher Development Programme (RDP) courses in the new academic term began with a Research Boot Camp. The boot camp was held from 10th to 14th October 2016. It was delivered by Dr Tissa Chandesa, Dr Jiin Woei Lee and Dr Maysoun Mustafa. It offered a range of intensive courses to help the new postgraduate research students to get going with their research degrees. The courses offered were:

  • Nature of the PhD and the Supervision Process;
  • Planning Research and Time Management;
  • Creative Thinking;
  • How to be an Effective Researcher; and
  • Getting into the Habit of Writing.

This picture was taken during the course on How to be an Effective Researcher. The course aimed to to enhance the effectiveness of postgraduate research students by using a broad range of activities that looked at many aspects of the research degree process. One of the activities conducted was tangram exercise. It is an adaptation of a Chinese puzzle game where each group of participants has to look for geometric pieces that were hidden around the Postgraduate Hub and successfully combine seven of these pieces onto a square template. Pictured is the group that made the most squares.

In addition to the courses in the boot camp, the RDP includes many other courses, designed to support postgraduate students at different stages of their PhDs. The list of courses can be viewed on Moodle at http://moodle.nottingham.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=11606.

The RDP was designed to support the early stages in the development of skills listed in the Vitae Researcher Development Framework.

The Graduate School is also open to requests for conducting tailor made courses. If you wish us to conduct such courses, please get in touch with us via email to graduateschool@nottingham.edu.my.
