Winner of the Images of Postgraduate Experience Photo Competition 2016

The Graduate School recently held its annual photography competition where it challenged postgraduate students to capture the essence of their postgraduate studies, research or experience with just one photographic image and an abstract.

The theme this year was ‘Through the Lens’ where postgraduate students can freely express, demonstrate and share their postgraduate experience from their own perspectives.

All the entries were showcased online and all staff and students were invited to vote for their favourite entry using an online voting portal. The entries were also displayed on a ‘photo wall’ and further provided an opportunity for people to view in person. All votes were counted towards the People’s Choice Award which carried a prize money of RM200.

The winner was chosen by a panel of judges and the prizes included a prize money of RM500 and a Canon IXUS 180 Digital Camera.

Rayan Sabra, a PhD student from the School of Pharmacy, was crowned Winner. The People’s Choice Awards also went to Rayan. Congratulations!

My project is about fabricating nanoparticles originating from natural resources to treat colon cancer as an alternative to chemical therapeutics that immensely affect patients’ quality of life. Portraying it in a chess-like game is to highlight on the common grounds I find between this game and my research work. As chess is considered a game that provides mental clarity required for solving problems, analyse consequences, and formulate future tactics, so as my research which requires careful consideration to come up with solutions that can terminate the suffering from colon cancer. In short, the front line (eight pawns) represents the results of different experiments carried on to characterize the nanoparticles, the biggest tube (the king) is the nanoparticle formulation under study and the rest of plastic-ware represent the different consumables used during my research. So far promising results are showing up, hoping that continues for a colon cancer-free life!

The photography competition this year showed the diversity and breadth of postgraduate experience at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. Well done to all the participants for their commendable efforts!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Canon Malaysia for their kind sponsorship, the judges for their time and effort in evaluating the entries, and all those who took the time to vote and supported the competition. Thank you!

We look forward to yet another exciting and interesting chapter of the photography competition next year!
