UNM student wins the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Fellowship 2019

We are proud to inform that Shivaani Mariapun, our PhD student from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, has recently won the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship and received a research grant of RM30,000.

Shivaani was awarded in recognition of her research on mammographic density and breast cancer risk in Asian women. Her study aims to determine the measure of mammographic density that most accurately predicts breast cancer risk as well as assess the performance of risk prediction models in Asian women, including mammographic density and genetic factors. She envisions the outcome of this study will help to build accurate risk prediction models and formulate effective screening strategies for early detention of the disease.

Shivaani, along with two other winners, was presented with the award in a ceremony held on 17 October 2019. The ceremony was also attended by YB Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, Deputy Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change.

“I am delighted to celebrate a double win for our ground-breaking research on the mathematical modelling of cancer risk, at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Shivaani is a worthy winner whose research findings will surely enhance the lives of women in Asia. Shivaani is mentored by our 2017 winner of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship, Dr Weang Kee Ho,” said Professor Deborah Hall, Vice Provost (Research and Knowledge Exchange) at University of Nottingham Malaysia.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship programme is a partnership between L’Oréal-UNESCO Malaysia with Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, to award outstanding young women scientists in their field of research and inspiring women scientists of tomorrow.
