Empowering your postgraduate research journey and ambition
The needs of the postgraduate research community are at the heart of what we do at the Graduate School. Our exclusive training and development provision includes over 60 specialist courses and researcher mobility funding. We also provide a training and development hub which offers dedicated social and study spaces for postgraduate students.
From facilitating public engagement events to providing the highest quality training and development support for postgraduate students, we aim to cultivate a supportive culture in which our postgraduate researchers can advance and thrive.
Making the most of the resources offered by us at the Graduate School
We appreciate that this is a challenging time for all of our postgraduate researchers, even more so for those who have just joined the University. We remain as dedicated as ever to delivering the highest quality training and development support for our postgraduate researchers amidst the ongoing pandemic.
In the new academic term, our training and development provision will kick off with a virtual boot camp consisting of a series of intensive courses aimed at new postgraduate researchers. These courses will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.
Understanding PhD expectations

This course will introduce the expectations of a doctoral study and provide an understanding of the roles of supervisors and research students.
Setting personal and professional development needs
Introduction to Development Needs Analysis
Tuesday 2 March 2021, 10am – 12nn
This course will introduce the tool to evaluate and plan personal, professional and career development.
Developing good time management and research planning
Planning Research and Time Management
Wednesday 3 March 2021, 2pm – 4pm
This course will support the development of good time management and enable students to plan their research development more efficiently.
Developing critical and creative thinking
Creative Thinking
Thursday 4 March 2021, 10am – 12nn
This course will introduce the techniques to enhance creative thinking and subsequently promote critical thinking and problem solving.
Encouraging critical and independent thought on science
Philosophy of Science
Friday 5 March 2021, 10am – 12nn
This course will explore the critical and independent thought on science; its foundations, methods and implications.
