Be part of our research community
As part of its renewed strategic plan, the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) has strongly emphasised research and knowledge exchange, recognising their potential to drive impact, help address societal challenges, and contribute to the communities in Malaysia. UNM is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive research environment, attracting and retaining talented researchers and students, and forming partnerships with industry, government, and community organisations to drive innovation and create a positive societal impact. To further promote research excellence and innovation, UNM has established research clusters designed to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations and facilitate knowledge exchange among researchers from different disciplines.
In line with its commitment to research excellence, UNM offers PhD High Achiever Scholarship 2023 and Research Excellence Scholarship 2023 that provide students with opportunities to pursue their postgraduate academic and research interests and, in turn, contribute to UNM’s research efforts and drive innovation.
1. PhD High Achiever Scholarship
Our University is a research-intensive global university whose core mission is to promote discovery, enterprise, and the advancement of the human condition. We are committed to a broad and diverse research environment that fosters both mature and emergent disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research. In supporting the delivery plans of Research and Knowledge Exchange under UNM’s renewed strategic plan, we are focusing on an integrated perspective of humanities and social sciences (HASS) with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across our research and knowledge exchange practice. We are concentrating on, but not limiting to, promising research areas emphasised in our research strategies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Please note that applicants are strongly encouraged to make contact with a prospective supervisor prior to submitting an application, to discuss the proposed research topic and related matters.
Please visit the UNM website for the contact details and research interests of your potential supervisor.

Clusters are our way to promote interdisciplinary research. They support delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan, which sets out goals that include undertaking impactful research that straddles the humanities and social sciences, engineering and science. Each cluster comprises staff from multiple Schools and Departments, often from both faculties; Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), and Science and Engineering (FoSE).
Clusters represent a coherent set of research identities, aligned to major global agendas and priority areas for Malaysia. They allow us to present our research to external parties in a way that shows a clear vision – a sense that we are focused and well organised, and have developed a research programme that fits the needs of government and society in Malaysia and beyond. They provide the internal framework within which we can provide the support to our staff which is also at the heart of the Strategic Plan.
The aim of the cluster scholarships is to promote interdisciplinary research within each cluster area by providing funds to support a postgraduate student.
