Summer Course: Publishing in High Quality Journals
Most of you would have probably heard of the phrase “publish or perish”. This phrase reflects the importance of academic publishing.
It is generally known that publishing in academia is important, but what about publishing during your PhD studies?
Publishing is important if you want to remain in academia after your PhD. It does not particularly help if you want to find a professional job once you have completed your PhD so for those not interested in academic positions, prioritising publishing may not be as important.
As a PhD student, you will usually publish the results of your PhD project. Although your research will be described in your PhD thesis, publishing requires writing up your research findings in the form of a journal article.
Getting your research into an influential journal is certain to boost your academic standing and future career prospects but how? How to get your research published in high quality journals? In this regard, we recently offered the ‘Publishing in High Quality Journals’ course on 14 June 2017. Delivered by Professor Graham Kendall, Provost and CEO, this course explained the criteria for good academic writing and the mechanics of getting published. One of the key learning outcomes was students would have understood the publication steps and further develop the essential skills to produce a scholarly article that is of high quality. Professor Kendall also shared some of his top tips on getting published, from the writing stage to submitting work and last but not least, dealing with feedback.
