A recap of 2017 Images of Research Photography Competition

The Images of Research Photography Competition was held in the month of November this year. It was opened to both postgraduate research and taught students. The theme was Resilience in Research. Thirty participants submitted their original photographic image (sharpening and minimal cropping were allowed) and a caption of no more than 50 words to the deadline of 17 November 2017. The announcement of the winners and prize-giving session was on 6 December 2017. The winner was Chan Zi Yang who went home with a RM500 cash prize. Nguyen Nhat Tan received the People’s Choice award with a RM200 cash prize.
From a personal perspective, the submissions this year were impressive. I loved the colours and different takes on how resilience is interpreted, and the different strategies in which the participants cope with the stress of postgraduate life. In terms of improvement for future submissions, two general trends were what I saw: they must be relevant to the theme and grammatically correct. Perhaps future participants could check with their trusted friends, family and/or colleagues regarding these two trends.
As we look forward to future competitions, we will incorporate the feedback that we obtained from the participants and judges who, despite their busy schedules, kindly took their time to judge all the submissions.
