Supervisory Research Seminar Series #3: Managing Research Students Progression
The third instalment of our Supervisory Research Seminar Series was held on 13 June 2019. This session delved into the topic of managing progression of research students. It aimed to share information on the key stages of annual review process at the University and discussed the roles and responsibilities of relevant parties in ensuring satisfactory progression.
The session was delivered by Dr Michelle Tan, Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Dr Tan is the Chair of Faculty Research Operations Group (FROG) which deals with progression and welfare matters of research students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FOSE).

Annual review & progression
During the session, Dr Tan highlighted the importance of monitoring progression of research students. She further discussed the attributes of satisfactory progression and outlined the key stages and milestones of research students which include first year annual review, second year progression review, third year thesis review and last but not least, thesis pending period.
Progress management
Keeping on track with the progression of research students can be challenging for supervisors in view of the hectic nature and extent of academia that includes teaching obligations, research work and administrative duties. In this connection, Dr Tan shared some guidance for supervisors on the assessment and monitoring process. She also shared detailed information on the roles and responsibilities of research students, supervisors, internal assessors, postgraduate student adviser as well as the progression board. Some case studies involving common and uncommon scenarios were also presented and discussed.

What is it about?
The Supervisory Research Seminar Series is aimed at all active research supervisors, especially early career researchers who are new to research supervision at University of Nottingham Malaysia. The landscape of research supervision is constantly shifting; from changes in policy through to new and different models of doctorate, the expectations of funding bodies to the expectations and capabilities of research students. Navigating these differences and knowing the best thing to do for all concerned is not always straightforward, even for experienced supervisors. The sessions cover topics that have been highlighted by supervisors as areas where they would like more advice and practice-sharing opportunities. These sessions aim to support a culture of the discussion of research supervision purpose and practice across the University and inform staff on a wide range of supervision topics.
The next session will address the topic of managing the middle stage of an academic career by Professor Dominic Foo. It is scheduled for Monday 5 August 2019 from 2pm – 4pm in H1B13.
