Shut up & write!

Writing is an important element in academia. During unprecedented times such as now where everyone is restricted to work or study from home and deprived of outdoor activities, this presents a great opportunity to focus on your writing.

Therefore, we are offering two Shut Up and Write sessions via Microsoft Teams.

  • Session 1: Monday 13 April 2020, 10am – 12noon

  • Session 2: Tuesday 14 April 2020, 2pm – 4pm

Objectives

The session is aimed to provide a platform for postgraduate research students who are in their thesis pending period or preparing their annual review for submission to:

  1. work more productively by limiting the amount of distraction that they may experience while in at home;

  2. break the writer’s block in a supportive environment.

The session will be based on the Pomodoro Technique which is a time management technique that is utilised to manage writing task into timed intervals.

The session starts with a brief introduction and is then broken into 4 cycles:

  • Introduction – 5 minutes

  • Cycle 1: Writing – 20 minutes

  • Break – 5 minute

  • Cycle 2: Writing – 20 minutes

  • Break – 5 minutes

  • Cycle 3: Writing – 20 minutes

  • Break – 5 minutes

  • Cycle 4: Writing – 20 minutes

The writing period is 80 minutes long – please remember to bring something to write.

You will need to bring with you:

  • any documents/resources – conference/journal papers, annual reports, etc.

Target audience

Postgraduate research students who are in their thesis pending period or preparing their annual review write up.
