C0VID-19: Update for early career researchers (11 September 2020)

As we (all staff) returned back to campus starting from 1 September 2020 onwards, therefore, this will be our last blog updates to our early career researcher (ECR) community from us at the Graduate School. Don’t forget you can get in touch with us via Facebook or by email at rad@nottingham.edu.my.
Upcoming training courses
We are currently in the midst of finalising several training courses for our ECR community that will be conducted during the autumn 2020 semester. The table below lists the training courses and the proposed time the mentioned course will be conducted.

University of Nottingham nominations to attend the 2020 U21 ECR workshop
We are pleased to announce that the Researcher Academy in conjunction with the Rights Lab will host this year’s U21 ECR Workshop from 30 November to 4 December. This virtual workshop’s theme of ‘Modern Slavery, Forced Labour and Human Trafficking’ will mark the UN’s International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.
To be eligible for the workshop, researchers must have been awarded their PhD and have no more than 8 years post-PhD experience. The University of Nottingham may nominate 10 researchers from across our three campuses (UNUK, UNM and UNNC). The nominees will be selected to represent the breadth of research undertaken at Nottingham and researchers are encouraged to apply from across the University. The workshop will be held virtually and so there are no travel costs associated with attendance and there is no registration fee for the 10 nominees. Applications made directly to U21 will not be accepted. Further details on the workshop can be found on the U21 website.

Supporting career development of early career researchers
University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) prides itself in nurturing and supporting researchers that deliver research that transform lives and shapes the future. As such, UNM Graduate School collaborates with senior academic members of staff to deliver a number of opportunities to enhance the personal and professional development of our ECRs. On Tuesday 18 August 2020, Dr Seow Hsin-Vonn (Associate Professor of Operations Research and currently the Associate Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNM) delivered the above-mentioned workshop for ECRs. The two-hour workshop covered important aspects of being an academician, such as time management, prioritising task and work-life balance. Read more
An introduction to creating surveys with Qualtrics
Good research data collection plays a pivotal role in obtaining the relevant information to answer a given research question(s). Several research data collection methods exist, such as interviews, observation, focus groups, questionnaires and surveys. On Monday 24 August 2020, Mr Jaya Kumar Karunagharan (Head of Foundation in Science) and Dr Chuma Owuamalam (Assistant Professor at Division of Organisational and Applied Psychology) jointly conducted a workshop titled An introduction to creating surveys with Qualtrics (a widely used survey tool in academia). Introduction to the Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics
University of Nottingham released a new version of Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics on 25 June 2020. Click here for more details. In our continuous efforts to raise awareness of the new version, Dr Soma Mitra (Associate Professor in the School of Biosciences & Chair of the Science and Engineering Research Ethics Committee at UNM) conducted a one-off workshop titled Introduction to the Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics on 25 August 2020, aimed primarily at UNM research community. Supervising Doctoral Studies (SDS) online course
University of Nottingham offers a set of self-directed online modules for new supervisors and those who have more experience. The online course has interactive content such as videos, quizzes and a personal portfolio. Kindly use your university credentials to join the course. Engaging via Microsoft Teams
We are happy to act as the mediator for any senior researchers to engage with ECRs on issues pertaining to research sustainability. Issues may include (but not limited to) a chat about how you are currently coping with your research; how are you conducting your research when everything is shut down or unavailable; potential collaborations;and future grant applications.
