A farewell to our 2015 summer interns
As the UNMC Summer Internship Programme 2015 officially came to an end, it was time for all those involved to spare a thought on the significance of the experience and what it means to them. The farewell lunch for this year’s interns was held at the Careers Advisory Service (CAS) office on Aug 27, a day before the end of their 3-month stint.
The gathering was also attended by their department mentors who took part in a fun ice-breaking game with the mentees called ‘Secret Identity’. The emcee of the event, CAS student assistant Jaden See, then presented an entertaining slideshow that explained how all nine interns’ on-the-job training has benefited them in their academic and professional aspirations.
After this activity, each intern gave an insight into their valuable experience through slideshow and video presentations. They shared their experience managing deadlines and working on real problems under active guidance of their mentors, while some proudly explained the meaningful projects they were assigned with (one helped set up a server on bus monitoring, the other managed to get graduates to plant trees on campus) that would prove beneficial to the University in the long run.
Zafirahanis Bakar said her best memory of her internship at the School of Bio- science was when she did a lab demonstration for a group of multicultural students. “This experience has provided me meaningful simulation that helped me gain a better understanding of the real work environment. Moreover, I had the opportunity to assist my supervisor Christina Supramaniam where I worked in the campus labs operating softwares and sophisticated machines.”
“I found the work of developing the University’s online module to be very different than what I had initially imagined – I thought we’d be sitting all day at the office doing research!” said School of Modern Languages and Cultures intern, Victoria Cheng in her video presentation. “Instead, my team and I had to learn our way by heart, with guidance from the mentors. We had to study the technicalities involved in producing the module, scout for locations, interview people from the streets. Our creativity thrived when we worked on these various elements because we had to learn to trust each team member’s abilities.”
Victoria’s teammate, Samuel Too, echoed her point by saying, “The entire dynamic of getting to interact with local people around Semenyih and Broga on a more personal level for the module was what made our job not such a boring experience after all.”
Corporate Marketing intern Edmend Kooh, on the other hand, gave a shout out to the CAS team for organizing career development workshops throughout the internship period. “Thank you so much for organizing the workshops during my internship, with materials that will help me address my future transition from college to work,” he said.
At the event the interns were able to taste some local food as well as take pictures with their mentors. For the remainder of the farewell lunch, Mavis Tsang, the University’s Director of Student Experience presented the interns with their certificate of completion before CAS head, Alicia Ch’ng, provided a closing speech by congratulating the interns for their wonderful work on campus and wishing them further success in their future endeavors.
