Academics win award with outstanding paper

Congratulations to Dr Maggie Ooi, Mr Amirul Islam and Professor Andy Chan from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) for being awarded the “Best Paper Award” at the 3rd International Conference on Research Methodology for Built Environment and Engineering (ICRMBEE 2017) held on the 8-9 November 2017. It was organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) at the Best Western Hotel i-City, Shah Alam, Malaysia.

The award-winning paper “Comparison of WRF Local and Nonlocal Boundary Layer Physics in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia” discussed the performance of state-of-art weather research and forecast modelling tool, WRF software to reproduce the atmospheric boundary layer of the highly urbanised city. The detailed presentation on the research method was delivered by Mr Amirul Islam, on behalf of Dr Ooi, which had attracted the judges’ attention. The paper will be published in an ISBN/Scopus-indexed paper. The authors are grateful for the RAGS funding provided by MOHE under 600-RMI/RAGS 5/3 (66/2015) and Dr Siti Aekbal Salleh from UiTM. They would also like to thank the University of Nottingham Malaysia for the access to the University’s High-Performance Computing Facility in the United Kingdom.

Dr Ooi will be conferred her PhD degree from the University come February. She has officially started the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the National Central University of Taiwan this November. Her research work focuses on the urban climate and air quality modelling in Greater Kuala Lumpur. Mr Islam is a first-year PhD student at the University and focuses on haze transportation modelling in the Southeast Asia region.
