We Sweep Championships at IMechE EngNow 2014

On 29 November, IMechE EngNow 2014 – Engineering the Future was hosted at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Student Chapter. This event provided the platform to host 2 national level competitions i.e. Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE), The Queen’s Silver Jubilee Competition, and Biomedical Devices for the Visually Impaired Design Competition, with winners of the competitions proceeding to South East Asia Level representing Malaysia overseas.

Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE), a presentation competition challenging engineers to improve their communication and presentation skills, had 10 entries from Young Members of IMechE from all over Malaysia, including 9 universities out of which 7 presenters were selected to present at the National Finals at EngNow 2014.

  • Chong Kar Yen (University Teknologi Petronas)
  • Yeoh Chin Vern (Monash University Malaysia)
  • Baapu Shreraj (Taylor’s University)

The panel of Judges for this contest included one engineer and two non-engineers who have extensive expertise in Public Speaking, members of Toastmasters International. The judges for this contest were:

  • Mr. Jeswan Singh
  • Alex Lu, ACS, ALB
  • Robert Ram, DTM

After witnessing  presentations at the UNMC Great Hall, the score sheet determined the winners as follows:

SofE

  • Champion : Shreyasi Hait (UNMC)
  • Runner-Up : Baapu Shreraj (Taylor’s University)
  • Second Runner-Up : Yeoh Chin Vern (Monash University Malaysia)

Following SOfE, the next competition of the day was Biomedical Devices for the Visually Impaired Design Competition with participation of three teams as listed below:

  • NottShades (UNMC)
  • NaVi-Tic Mobilizer (UNiTEN)
  • GreenPhew (UNiTEN)

The panel of judges for this technical contest included three seasoned engineers, one of whom was a part of panel of judges for SOfE.

After showcasing their prototypes and presentations, the teams were asked questions by the panel of judges and members of the floor about business feasibility of their ideas and technical complexity of their designs to help improve the lives of the visually impaired members of the society, the judges decided the winners as below:

Nottshades

  • Champion : NottShades (UNMC)
  • Runner-Up : GreenPhew (UNiTEN)

UNMC was crowned champions of this prestigious competition and received their award from Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering, UNMC, Prof. Andy Chan. This event was not only successful for UNMC in the participation standpoint, but also in organising aspects as it was hosted by UNMC through the IMechE Student Chapter of UNMC.

“This was the largest event of the year for us and we are truly honoured that we had the chance to organise this event at our beautiful campus to showcase that UNMC is not only a leading academic institution, but also rich with passionate individuals who find time out of their busy schedules to take part in extra-curricular activities and improve their leadership and management skills”, said Alireza Parpaei, President of IMechE Student Chapter of UNMC who was also a part of the m champion team, NottShades.

IMechE EngNow 2014 – Engineering the Future was sponsored by Motorola Solutions, Faculty of Engineering and IMechE Malaysia   Branch. Digital Arts Guild UNMC was the event official media partner and it was supported by UNMC Student Association.
