Changing Minds Through Mindset
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Environmental Studies or Mindset is situated at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) and is a research centre that focuses on environmental studies. Mindset’s purpose is to conduct, facilitate, and inspire interdisciplinary research on environmental issues.
Aptly named Mindset, with the aid of social science, their aim is to change people’s mindset about achieving and ensuring a sustainable future by establishing bridges between sound environmental science, and innovative technology. Furthermore, it aims to create social awareness through outreach activities and to advise policy makers in Malaysia and beyond on environmental matters.
Mindset event
Mindset is a cross-campus group initiative which is directed by Dr Matthew Ashfold and co-directed by Dr Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz from the School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences. The centre’s membership is composed of various researchers from other schools, departments and faculties at UNMC.
Dr Matthew Ashfold said: “It is now almost three years since Mindset was formed, and in this time the centre has achieved a lot. We have catalysed new cross-campus interdisciplinary research efforts in environmental sustainability and created an exciting environmental forum in the centre of Kuala Lumpur by hosting around 25 public events.”
He added: “In the coming years, we aim to continue to grow our research output, and in particular, to generate insights that will be valuable in Malaysia’s sustainable development.”

The Mindset research centre undertakes interdisciplinary environmental research under a number of themes such as Pro-environmental Behaviour, Biodiversity Conservation, and Liveability of Kuala Lumpur just to name a few. In fact, the research centre strives to do more than investigate and report on bad news about the environment. Rather, through their research, it aims to identify the potential solutions for the end goal of environmental sustainability.
The research centre also organises monthly public events at Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre (KLTC) on various environmental topics. The events are open to the general public and are free to attend. The topics of these events can range from conservation to protected areas, to environmental health, to legal issues, and to any topic of pressing urgent interest in the region. Mindset also invites well-known speakers who specialise in their respective fields and are able to engage with the audience after their talk. Most importantly, Mindset keeps records of previously held public events with the archival of information and recordings of the talk available to all. In addition to the events which are open to the public, the events are particularly popular with UNMC students as there is transport provided from UNMC to KLTC.
