Developing today’s and tomorrow’s talents

As part of its commitment to providing students and staff with real-world industry experience, the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) has partnered with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), a leading professional body for securities, investment, wealth, and financial planning.

This MoU with UNM and the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) supports an existing relationship between UNM and CISI, first established in 2018, which recognised NUBS as a CISI Accredited Training Provider. The MoU marks CISI’s first partnership with a university in Malaysia.

UNM Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning, Dr Hazel Melanie Ramos, shared that UNM always has and will continue to welcome industry partnerships that encourage personal growth amongst students, academicians and staff.

This collaboration will benefit students and staff through industry-standard training and exclusive memberships to CISI and its perks, helping to expand students’ knowledge of the financial services industry and the management of financial assets.

Besides the qualification for international introduction to securities and investments, UNM students who take the CISI professional exam will also receive a free membership for 12 months, access to CISITV, a video archive of CISI’s best events, and The Review, an online magazine. CISITV offers e-learning modules and access to CISITV’s Professional Refresher platform.

UNM Interim Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Dr Vengadeshvaran Sarma, also expressed the University’s mission in nurturing well-rounded students who are attuned to global issues. Partnering with CISI, an international organisation with 45,000 members from 111 countries, fits right into that goal to produce prepared and globalised talents. Furthermore, graduating with this recognised qualification will complement any academic degree, providing students with the knowledge and skills to advance in their careers.

Relevant staff members and lecturers will also benefit from CISI’s Accredited Training Partner (ATP) Portal and training support via its Train The Trainer (TTT) practice, whilst lecturers will have the opportunity to take CISI exams for free.

With this collaboration and more to come, UNM hopes to encourage active participation from students, getting them involved on campus to advance their personal and professional development, thus enhancing their employability.

At the signing ceremony, UNM and CISI also held two workshops to develop ethical decision-making skills in students and staff, providing participants tips and tools to speak confidently on problems in an organisation, aiming to achieve better corporate governance.
