Sticking to Your Resolutions

2021 has already been in full swing for a week now, and some of us may find our determination wavering when it comes to upholding our resolutions. However, it is never too late to start or restart your goals and, in this article, we go back to the advice Dr Jessica Price gave us previously (please refer to UNM CMCO Comm #13, dated 25 November 2020) on how to stay productive.

  1. Start small

While it may be tempting to create huge goals at the beginning, the pressure of not meeting near impossible standards may soon become detrimental. Instead, create a manageable goal that challenges you, while simultaneously inspiring you to become a better version of yourself. You could join online interest groups, or you could meet people on Discord (a free online platform) who have similar interests.

2. Break your goals up into smaller ones

Once you have set your goals, start breaking them up into manageable chunks instead of being one large daunting goal so it is now a series of smaller and easier ones. You could use a time management app such as Forest: Stay focused, it is based on the Pomodoro Technique, which is a popular method of time management where you break your task down to work in intervals of usually 25 minutes.

3. Have personal deadlines

This is related to the step above, once you have managed to break your goals down, have a personal deadline for each of them. This will ensure that you do not procrastinate.

4. Do not punish yourself

It is self-explanatory. Do not berate yourself if you do not meet your goals according to your plan. Simply acknowledge it and move on.

5. Make sure you reward yourself

Finally, every time you hit a milestone in your journey, make sure to reward yourself. It does not have to be anything big, even a cup of coffee would do. It is as important to acknowledge just how much you have achieved as it is to focus on how much you have left.

We hope these tips help you have a fruitful year ahead.
