UNM’s favourite couple from the Chinese stall

Fondly referred to by the students as Aunty and Uncle, the YAMI Chinese stall owners, Hee Yip Choy and her husband, Wong Chee Meng are known among the student circle as UNM’s favourite couple as they continued to serve food at the cafeteria on campus throughout the various movement control orders.

Their stall, a favourite among students who lived in the University’s on campus accommodation, immediately devised their own delivery system that was free of charge during the first Movement Control Order in March last year. This was a difficult decision for them, as adapting to the new norms meant that they had to do their own deliveries, as they were refraining from collaborating with food delivery services to ensure that affordable meals were available to students.

However, despite the sudden changes to their routine, the duo found many rewarding aspects to their job, citing that they enjoyed the challenge that came with cooking a wide variety of meals and the smiles they put on students’ faces with their delicious food.

Their determined attitudes during these unprecedented times did not go unnoticed and on 8 June 2020, they were featured in an article by The Star, highlighting their contributions to the local community.

When we asked about this achievement, the two were quite bashful in their response, telling us that it was a group effort by everyone who helped out in their journey. Nevertheless, it is an amazing accomplishment, and we congratulate them on their hard work in feeding the UNM family.

Their future plans for YAMI Chinese Stall are to put more research into creating a wider variety of Chinese dishes to be available on their menu.
