University of Nottingham celebrates over 300 graduates at a physical ceremony
The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) celebrates more than 300 graduands from the Classes of 2021 and 2022. This marks the first physical graduation ceremony since the pandemic as the last ceremony was in February 2020.
The physical graduation ceremonies were held on 26 and 27 February at UNM’s stunning campus, hosting graduands, loved ones and the UNM community. This was an event which was also missed dearly in the past, due to the restrictions brought upon by COVID-19.
“We are delighted to see our graduands in their robes walking across the stage to collect their scrolls as this is a moment that they have all been looking forward to and in a manner that was safe to do so.
“In the absence of the physical ceremonies, we continued to host virtual graduation celebratory events to mark their special day and we are so glad that we could keep our commitment and organise in-person ceremonies for the Classes of 2021 and 2022,” UNM Registrar Patrick Joseph said.
Alumni Laureate Awards 2020
At the graduation ceremony, UNM also presented the prestigious Alumni Laureate Awards (ALA) 2020. ALA is an award to reward and honour the achievements made by University of Nottingham alumni who have made incredible contributions to their community, have created new avenues for their research and have put forth outstanding displays of creativity and leadership in their fields.
For the ALA 2020, recipients under The Special Excellence Award and The Recent Graduate Award were conferred to Emeritus Professor Malachi Edwin Vethamani and Mathialagan Magendran, respectively.
Emeritus Professor Vethamani (PhD in English, 1996) was also former Head of School of English at UNM and is an ardent poet. Meanwhile, Mathialagan (MSc in Environmental Monitoring and Management, 2014), who currently works at Duopharma Biotech Berhad as a Sustainability Specialist, is a champion of sustainable initiatives.
The graduation ceremony was presided by University of Nottingham Malaysia Interim Provost and CEO Professor Sarah Metcalfe in the presence of UNM members of the management board, academics, staff and family and friends of graduands.
The graduands from Classes of 2021 and 2022 are part of the over 300,000 University of Nottingham alumni community worldwide.
